Carrots - Chantenay Red Core
A short, sweet carrot that needs no peeling.
Chantenay carrots are quick and easy to cook, sweet enough to eat raw from the fridge, and small enough to skip the peeler. Sow seeds directly in the garden — they germinate in soil as cold as 50°F, with 70°F as the optimum. Keep the upper inch of soil consistently moist for the first 7 to 14 days while seedlings emerge. Thin to about two inches between plants once a few leaves appear. Carrots prefer full sun, cool soil, and about an inch of water a week.
The Garden Guide can help you time your sowings for a continuous summer-into-fall harvest.
• Direct-sow; germinates at 50–70°F
• Full sun; cool, consistent moisture (~1" per week)
• Thin to 2" spacing for proper root development
• Spring sowing harvests mid-summer; replant mid-summer for fall
